4 steps

1. STEP 1 · BRING A PHOTOGRAPHDrop a photograph on the sheet. This press is about what happens AFTER a picture is finished: it is made into an object and looked at again, and everything below is one of the three things that does to it. A continuous-tone photograph shows it best · a flat graphic has nothing for the paper to take.
2. STEP 2 · PRINT ITEffects → PRINT & PRESS → Printroom. Set Stock to Rag: the sheet writes its own numbers in one go · a deep tooth, a black that never reaches ink black, a warm white, and its fibre. Then Print size. Eight inches is the rest position; take it down toward four and the detail goes with it, because a small print is a soft print. Press contrast is what the press does on its own; Pull back first lowers the file before it so the print comes back where you had it.
3. STEP 3 · BRING IT BACKBrought back by → Camera. Now the room appears: Light (Bounced is the gentle one, Direct sun the hard one), Light from, and how far the light falls off across the sheet. Hard light rakes the tooth and shows it; bounced light does not. Gelled takes the colour you are holding as the colour of the lamp. Leave it on Scanner instead and you get the other truth: no gradient at all, a faint magenta cast, dust and a scratch or two.
4. STEP 4 · GIVE IT ITS EDGEThe print’s edge, at the foot of the same press, trims the picture into a rebate of bare stock · the margin a print is cut with, in the paper’s own white, and it lights and softens with the rest of the sheet. If you want it mounted as well, Frames & Borders goes round the outside afterwards.
