THE MOTION

A shooting star

A dark sheet, a sky of small stars that twinkle, and one star that rides an arc you draw with a tail of light behind it.

3 steps

  1. STEP 1 · THE SKYFill a layer with a night colour, then take Type (T) and set a line of small marks across it · dots, ✦, ✧ · in a pale ink. Open MOTION, pick that layer, and lay IT TWINKLES: every glyph dips and comes back on its own phase and pace, so the line reads as a sky rather than as one thing blinking. Depth, Tempo and how much the size joins in are on the tune.
  2. STEP 2 · THE STAR AND ITS ROADSet one bigger ✦ in a warm ink on its own layer and give it a glow (Halation, then IT GLOWS so the glow breathes). With the reel open and that layer picked, draw its arc with the pen · the drawn line becomes the move, at the speed you drew it.
  3. STEP 3 · THE TAILEffects → MOTION → It leaves a tail of light. The star is smeared back along its own road as light in its own colour · screened, softer and thinner toward the end, gone at its reach. How far back, Fade, Soft and Toward the light are its dials. Press ▶. Set the sky’s life to ENDLESS and a loop of the shot never shows the same night twice.
